Arborist Reports Sydney
Someone has told you that you may need an arborist report — a council, a planner, a builder, a strata manager or a neighbour — and now you are not sure what that means or what to do about it.
This page explains what people generally mean by the term, what to ask the person who raised it, and where to check. It does not decide the question for you, because we cannot.

What people mean by an arborist report
When a council or a planning process uses the term, it generally means a written assessment of a tree, or a group of trees, prepared by a suitably qualified consultant engaged for that purpose. City of Sydney, for example, publishes that where a tree needs further analysis, an applicant will need to engage a consultant arborist, and that the council sets out in writing what that consultant's report needs to address.
Two things follow from that, and they matter.
A report is a document, not a service we perform. It is written by an independent consultant, and its contents are usually shaped by whoever asked for it.
What a report has to contain is set by the person asking, not by a general standard you can look up. That is why the most useful thing you can do is go back to whoever raised it.
Why you may have been told you need one
The question usually arrives in one of a few ways.
A council has asked for more information
Councils protect trees through their own local controls. Where a council wants more detail before it deals with a tree matter — because of the tree's condition, its structure, its roots or its significance — it may ask for a report and tell you what that report has to cover.
A building or development project is involved
This is the most common trigger. Where proposed work sits near a tree — a build, an extension, a pool, a driveway, or excavation anywhere near a root zone — tree matters are generally dealt with as part of that application, and a report may form part of the documents.
A property manager, strata committee or owner has asked
Managed and shared properties often have their own requirements before work is authorised, separate from anything a council asks for.
Someone has raised a concern about the tree
A neighbour, a purchaser or an insurer may raise a question about a tree, and ask for something in writing from an independent party.
The five questions to ask whoever raised it
This is the practical part, and it will save you the most time. Before you organise anything, go back to the person or organisation that raised the report and ask:
- Are you requiring a report, or suggesting one? Those are very different, and the answer changes what you do next.
- What exactly does it need to cover? Councils and project managers usually state this. Without it, a consultant is guessing.
- Who is required to write it? Some requesters specify the level of qualification they will accept.
- What is the deadline, and what is it attached to? A report tied to a development application has a different timeline from one raised on its own.
- Can any work proceed in the meantime, or does everything wait? This one determines whether you can book anything now.
Write the answers down. If you later need to organise physical tree work, those answers are what tell us what you are working to.
Words you may come across
Searching this topic turns up a lot of terminology — consultant arborist, certified arborist, qualified arborist, Level 5 arborist, tree surgeon, tree report, tree assessment. These generally refer to the qualifications held by the people who write reports and give formal tree advice, and different requesters accept different things.

Where to check your council's position
Whatever has been raised, your own council's current information is the thing that applies to your property. Councils across Sydney publish what they protect, what needs an application and how they want to be asked, and those documents differ from one council to the next.

When a report question comes up before a removal
If you were planning to remove a tree and a report question has appeared, it does not necessarily stop everything — but it does change the order.
Sort out what has been asked of you first. Then come to us with the work you want quoted. You can ask for a quote while you are still waiting on an answer; just tell us that is the situation, and nothing will be booked until you say so. What we will not do is tell you that you are clear to proceed. Only the person who raised the requirement can do that.

What to include when you ask us for a quote
Your suburb, the tree and roughly how big it is, where it stands, what is underneath and around it, the work you want done and how we can reach the work area. Photos help; take them only from somewhere safe.
You are welcome to tell us that a report or council question has been raised. We will not decide it or comment on it, but knowing it exists means we can quote the work sensibly and hold off booking until you are ready.
If the situation is urgent
A report question is an administrative problem. A tree that has come down, is hanging or is resting on a structure is not.
If that is what you are dealing with, keep well clear, keep others clear, and if there is a risk to life, a powerline involved or any electrical hazard, contact emergency services or your electricity network provider first. Then contact us about emergency tree work.
