When tree removal may be the right next step
Tree removal is not the answer to every tree problem. Sometimes targeted pruning, lopping or stump work is a better fit. But removal may be worth considering when a tree is dead, badly damaged, causing an ongoing clearance problem or no longer suits the space around it.
You may be looking at removal because the tree is:
- growing too close to a roof, driveway, fence, pool or building;
- dropping large limbs or has visible damage after weather;
- taking up the space needed for a renovation, access route or new landscaping plan;
- hard to manage because of its size, location or surrounding structures; or
- leaving a stump or large amount of tree material that also needs attention.
The useful starting point is not trying to guess the whole answer online. Show us the tree, its position and what it is affecting. We can then quote for the physical work you need.

A tree that is dead, part-dead or badly damaged is one of the most common reasons people ask about removal. It is also the situation where the details matter most, because the tree's condition changes how the work has to be approached and what sits at risk around it.

Every property is different. A tree in an open front yard is not the same job as a mature tree near a home with limited access.
When you contact us, tell us:
- your suburb and property type;
- whether the tree is near a roof, driveway, boundary, pool, fence or other structure;
- what has changed or what problem you are trying to solve;
- how big the tree is compared with something nearby, such as the house or the fence line;
- whether we can reach the tree from the street, through a side gate, or only through the house or a shared area;

Tree problems do not look the same on every property, and the person arranging the work is not always the person who owns the tree.
For a home It is usually straightforward. Tell us where the tree is, what it is affecting and how we can get to it, and we will quote for the removal work you have asked for.
For a strata or shared property The tree is often in common property or on a shared boundary, which means the owners corporation or the strata manager usually decides what happens and who arranges it. If you are a resident rather than the decision maker, it is worth confirming who is authorised to approve the work before you request a quote, so the job is not held up later. For a commercial site The work usually has to be planned around the way the property is used. Tell us about vehicle movements, car spaces, delivery access, visitor areas, tenancies and any part of the site that cannot be blocked. That information changes how the job is approached, so it belongs in the first enquiry rather than on the day.

Council rules and tree removal in Sydney
This is the question most people ask before anything else, so it is worth being straight about it.
Rules can vary by local council, the tree and the property. Check the current requirements with your own council if you are unsure. We do not decide council requirements or guarantee an approval outcome.
What that means in practice is simple. Whether a tree can be removed, and whether anything needs to be lodged first, is a matter between you and your council, not something we can settle for you. Our Council Rules page sets out the kinds of questions worth asking, and where to look. It does not tell you the answer for your property.
You can still ask us for a quote while you are checking. Plenty of people do, because it helps to know what the physical work involves before they make a decision. The quote covers the tree work. It does not cover anything a council may require.
If the tree is on or near a boundary
If the tree sits on or close to a fence line, tell us where the trunk actually is and whose property it stands on. That one detail decides who arranges the work, and it is the thing most often left out of an enquiry.
We quote for work on the property of the person engaging us, with their authority. If the tree belongs to a neighbour, or straddles a boundary, that is a conversation between the property owners first. What happens to the timber, branches and stump
A tree removal produces a lot of material, and what happens to it is a scope question worth settling in the quote rather than on the day. It is also the part people most often assume is included when it has not been discussed.
Tell us what you want to happen. The usual options are:
- everything cleared from the property;
- the branches and smaller material cleared, with usable logs cut and left on site for you;
- the timber left in a particular spot, such as beside a shed or off the lawn; or
- material already on the ground from an earlier job or storm taken away at the same time.
If you want firewood-length logs left behind, say so and tell us roughly what length suits you. If you want nothing left at all, say that instead. Either is fine. What matters is that the quote names it, so there is no disagreement later.

Once the work is booked, a few practical things make the day go smoothly. None of them are complicated, and it is easier to sort them out in advance than on the morning.
- Clear the way in. Move cars off the driveway, unlock side gates and let us know if a gate is too narrow to bring material through.
- Move what you can from under and around the tree. Pots, outdoor furniture, bins, toys, bikes and anything breakable are better out of the way.
- Keep pets and children inside and away from the work area for the whole time we are on site.
- Tell us in advance about anything below the surface or fixed in place near the tree, such as irrigation, a septic system, a pool, paving, a retaining wall, a shed or a clothesline.
- If the property is a unit block, a townhouse complex or a commercial site, let the people who need to know about it in advance, and tell us if there are hours when work cannot happen.

What affects a tree-removal quote?
There is no honest one-price answer for every tree. Two trees that look similar from the street can be very different jobs once you account for what sits around them.
These are the things that genuinely change a tree-removal quote:
- The tree itself. Height, trunk size, spread, condition and how much material has to come down.
- Where it sits. How close it is to a house, fence, pool, shed, driveway, boundary or anything else that has to be protected while the work happens.
- Getting to it. Whether the tree can be reached from the street, whether there is a side gate wide enough, whether there are steps, a slope, a narrow driveway or only a through-the-house route.
- How much has to be brought down and moved. A large canopy produces a lot of material, and that affects the work involved in clearing it.
- What you want left behind. Everything cleared, or logs cut and left on site, is a different scope.
- Related work requested at the same time. Stump grinding, pruning of a nearby tree, or clearing material already on the ground.
We do not publish a price list, because a figure taken from a page rather than the property is not a real quote and usually ends in a disagreement. Give us the basic details and photos where possible. That is the quickest way to get a quote that fits the actual job.
What to check before you accept any tree-removal quote
Most people asking about tree removal have not arranged one before, and it is not obvious what a good quote should contain. These are worth checking with anyone you ask, including us.
- Does the quote name the actual tree? On a property with several trees, a quote should be specific about which one, so there is no confusion on the day.
- Does it say what is included and what is not? Removal, clearing the material, and stump grinding are separate pieces of work. All three should be either clearly included or clearly excluded.
- Does it say what happens to the timber and branches? Cleared away, or cut and left on site, should be written down rather than assumed.
- Is the provider insured? Ask. We are fully insured, and any provider should be willing to answer the question directly.
- Is it in writing? A verbal figure over the phone is not a quote you can hold anyone to.
- Does it match what you actually asked for? If you asked about one tree and the quote covers three, or covers pruning when you asked about removal, get it corrected before you agree.
