TREE WORK ACROSS SYDNEY

Tree Surgeon Sydney

Looking for a tree surgeon in Sydney? In almost every case, what people want is straightforward: a tree cut back, taken down, cleared away, or made safe after a storm. That physical work is what Top Quality Tree Services does, for homes, strata properties and commercial sites across Sydney.

This page explains what the term usually means in Australia, which job you are probably after, and where to go if you need something we do not do. Tell us what the tree is doing and we will quote the work.

What people mean when they say "tree surgeon"

"Tree surgeon" is everyday language, and most of it comes from British English. It is not an Australian job title or qualification — there is no such thing as a registered tree surgeon here.

The recognised Australian qualifications in this field are arboriculture qualifications on the national training register: a Certificate III in Arboriculture for practical tree work, and a Diploma of Arboriculture, often called AQF Level 5, for consulting work such as written tree reports. You can look both up on training.gov.au, the national register.

So when someone searches for a tree surgeon, they usually mean one of two different things:

  • The physical work — cutting, pruning, reducing, removing, clearing. That is what we do.
  • A written assessment or report about a tree, usually because a council, builder, strata manager or neighbour has asked for one. That is consulting work, and it is not what we do.

Knowing which one you need saves everyone time, so the next section says plainly where we sit.

What we do, and what we do not

What Top Quality Tree Services does. The physical tree work: tree removal, tree pruning and trimming, tree lopping and reduction, stump grinding, palm removal, hedge and shrub work, green-waste clearing, gutter cleaning, and urgent help when a tree or branch has come down.

What we do not do. We are not arborists or consulting arborists, and we do not describe ourselves as tree surgeons. We do not prepare, sign, provide or arrange formal arborist reports, and we do not refer report providers. We do not carry out tree-health diagnosis, disease treatment, soil or root-zone treatment, or any form of written tree assessment. We do not handle council applications or decide whether approval is needed.

We would rather tell you that up front than take an enquiry we cannot help with.

If someone has asked you for a report, start with Arborist Reports Sydney — it explains what people generally mean by the term and what to ask the person who raised it. If what you need is the work itself, you are in the right place.

Which job do you actually need?

Most enquiries that arrive here are one of these. You do not have to be sure — describe the tree and we will point you to the right one.

  • Branches need cutting back, off a roof, driveway, fence or boundary. That is Tree Pruning Sydney.
  • The whole tree needs bringing down in size, not just a few branches. That is Tree Lopping Sydney.

Tree surgeon, arborist, tree lopper — the words people use

These four words get used for overlapping things, and the differences matter when you are choosing who to call.

Tree surgeon

Everyday language for someone who cuts, prunes and removes trees. No Australian qualification uses the title. Someone advertising as a tree surgeon may be very experienced, or may not be — the word itself tells you nothing.

Arborist

The proper term for a person qualified in arboriculture. A practical arborist works on trees; a consulting arborist assesses them and writes reports. We are neither, and we do not use the word about ourselves.

Tree lopper

Usually means someone doing reduction and clearance work. In our services, lopping is a specific job — bringing a tree down in size — and it is quoted separately from pruning.

Tree trimmer

Everyday language for pruning. Same work, different word.

What the work involves on site

Cutting back and reducing a canopy

Taking selected branches off, or bringing the outer canopy in where a tree has outgrown the space around it. Most enquiries that start with "tree surgery" end up here.

Taking out dead or damaged limbs

Removing dead, broken, split or hanging branches while the tree stays. If a limb is already hanging or cracked, keep clear of the area underneath it and tell us when you get in touch.

Removing a tree in a tight space

A tree beside a house, behind a narrow side passage or over a fence cannot come down in one piece. It comes down in sections, lowered in a controlled way, so what is underneath stays intact. Tell us what surrounds the tree and we will quote for the space it is actually in.

After a storm

Material down, a branch hanging, or a tree leaning differently than it did yesterday. Keep clear of the area and get in touch — Storm Damage & Emergency Tree Removal Sydney covers what to do first.

Branches near powerlines

Work near powerlines is restricted, and it is not something to attempt yourself.

Ausgrid, the electricity network operator for much of Sydney, states that property owners cannot independently trim trees near powerlines and must "engage an accredited or authorised Contractor to carry out the work", with clearances of "0.5 to 6m depending on species, location and bushfire risk".

We do not work on electricity infrastructure. If a branch is near a powerline, keep everyone well away, treat the line as live, and contact your electricity network provider. Tell us as well, so the quote covers only the work we can carry out.

What tree work costs

We do not publish prices, and we would be guessing if we did. What we quote depends on:

  • the tree — its size, height and condition;
  • the work — a few branches, a full reduction, or the whole tree;
  • what sits underneath and around it, from roofing and glass to fences, paving and parked cars;
  • how the work area can be reached and worked in;
  • how much material comes down, and what you want done with it; and
  • anything else you want quoted at the same time, such as stump grinding or green-waste clearing.

Our quotes are fixed for the work we agree. If something outside that scope comes up, it is quoted separately before it is done, not added afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

In everyday use, the work people call tree surgery is cutting, pruning, reducing and removing trees, plus clearing what comes down. That is the physical work we carry out.

Not quite. "Arborist" is the qualified profession; "tree surgeon" is everyday language with no Australian qualification behind it. A consulting arborist assesses trees and writes reports. We do the physical work.

No. We are a family-owned tree services business carrying out physical tree work. We do not describe ourselves as arborists, certified arborists or tree surgeons, and we do not claim qualifications we do not hold.

No. We do not prepare, sign, provide or arrange formal arborist reports, and we do not refer report providers. If someone has asked you for one, Arborist Reports Sydney explains what to ask them.

Ask whoever raised it what they actually need. If a council or a planning process wants a written assessment, that is consulting work. If the tree simply needs cutting, reducing or removing, that is work we can quote.

It depends on the tree, the work, what sits around it, how the area can be worked in and how much material comes down. We quote job by job rather than publishing prices, and the quote is fixed for the work we agree.

Yes. We can be contacted 24/7 for genuine emergency help with a fallen tree, a hanging branch or blocked access. Keep clear of the area and call rather than sending a form. Ordinary office hours are Monday to Sunday, 9am to 7pm.

Yes. Keep clear of the affected area, then tell us what has changed and what the tree is affecting. Photos can be sent by SMS, only when it is safe to take them.

Keep everyone well away and treat the line as live. Ausgrid states that property owners must engage an accredited or authorised contractor for vegetation work near powerlines. We do not work on electricity infrastructure — contact your electricity network provider, and tell us as well so the quote covers only the work we can carry out.

Sometimes. Some trees are protected, and rules can vary by local council, the tree and the property. Check the current requirements with your own council if you are unsure. We do not decide council requirements or guarantee an approval outcome — see Council Tree Removal Rules Sydney.

Yes. Top Quality Tree Services is fully insured. Ask us if you need details of the cover before work goes ahead.

Material comes down as part of the job and the quote sets out what is cleared with it. If there is material already on the ground, mention it and we will include green-waste clearing as a separate service.

Yes. Tell us who the quote should be addressed to, how many trees it covers, whether residents or staff need notice, and the hours the site can be worked in.

We work across metropolitan Sydney. Tell us your suburb and what the tree is doing, and we will confirm.

Yes. We offer a 10% discount for pensioners. Mention it when you enquire and we will apply it to your quote. GET A CLEAR QUOTE FOR THE TREE WORK YOU NEED
