What to check around your property once the weather has passed
Do this from the ground, in daylight, from a safe distance. Do not go under a damaged tree, onto a roof or up a ladder to get a better look.
Look up first
Check for branches that have broken but not fallen, branches caught in the canopy of the same tree or a neighbouring one, and splits where a limb joins the trunk. Material hanging above a path, driveway, entry, play area or parking space is the kind of thing worth telling us about straight away.
Look at the trunk and the base
Look for a new lean, a trunk split, bark torn away in a long strip, or soil that has lifted, cracked or domed on one side of the tree. Lifted soil and a fresh lean usually appear together and mean the tree has moved in the ground.
Look at what the tree is touching
