You cannot storm-proof a tree. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something they cannot deliver.
What you can do is manage the things that turn an ordinary storm into an expensive one: the dead limb nobody got around to, the branch that grew out over the roof, the canopy that has become top-heavy, the gutters that have not been cleared since last summer. Those are all maintenance decisions, and they are made in the calm months, not the wet ones.

A storm does not create most of the problems it exposes. It finds them.

A quick look every couple of months

Do not forget the rest of the property
The NSW State Emergency Service asks households to trim trees and branches that could fall on the home or property, clean gutters, downpipes and drains, fix roof damage such as broken or missing tiles, secure or put away items that could blow around in strong wind, and make sure insurance is current and covers what is needed.

- Maintenance does not guarantee a tree will survive a severe storm.
- Pruning does not make a structurally compromised tree safe.
- No inspection sees inside a trunk.
- A well-maintained tree in saturated ground can still move.
