It shows no signs of life, or large parts of it do not
No leaves in the growing season while other trees have them, bare branches through the canopy, bark falling away in sheets, or brittle limbs that snap rather than bend. A tree in that condition does not get safer with time — it gets more brittle.
The trunk is split, cracked or hollow
A vertical crack, a split where two main stems meet, a cavity, or a section that sounds hollow when tapped. The trunk is what holds everything up.
It has developed a lean
Not a tree that has always grown on an angle — a tree that has changed. Look for soil lifted, domed or cracked on one side of the base, or a gap opening between the trunk and the ground.
Storm damage has taken out major structure
A torn main limb, a canopy that has lost a large section, or a split at a main branch join. Some storm-damaged trees can be kept. Ones that have lost their structure usually cannot.
The roots are causing damage that keeps returning
Lifted paving, a cracked driveway, a disturbed slab or a retaining wall being pushed. Repairing the surface without addressing the tree usually means repairing it again.
The tree is simply in the wrong place
Growing hard against the house, over a pool, into a fence, or in the middle of where you need access. If you are pruning the same problem back every year, removal may be the more practical long-term answer.

Signs that usually mean pruning, not removal
Plenty of the things that worry people are fixable without losing the tree.

- A trunk that has split open.
- A new lean with lifted or cracked soil at the base.

Other reasons people remove trees
Not every removal is about damage.
- Building or landscaping. A tree in the footprint of new works usually has to come out before the project starts, not halfway through.
- A council or authority notice. If you have received a notice or direction about a tree, follow what it says and check the requirements with the council that issued it.
