Thinking about having a tree removed and not sure where to start? This guide covers the three things people ask us about most: what changes the price, when removal is genuinely the right call, and what actually happens on the day.

What affects the cost of tree removal
Published cost guides can give you a general range for planning, and our tree removal cost page sets out what they currently report for Sydney. What they cannot do is price your tree, because almost none of the work is the cutting. Most of it is everything around the cut — reaching the tree, controlling where each piece goes on the way down, protecting what is underneath, and getting the material back out. These are the things that move the number.
1. Where the tree stands and what is underneath it
The biggest single factor. A tree over open lawn can come down in large pieces. A tree over a roof, a pool, a fence, a driveway, a neighbour's property or a footpath has to be taken down in controlled sections and lowered, which takes longer and takes more people.
2. How we reach it, and how the material gets out
Gate widths, side access, stairs, slopes, retaining walls, where a vehicle can legally stop, shared driveways, and how far cut material has to be carried. This is the detail people most often leave out of an enquiry, and it is one of the largest differences between two otherwise identical jobs.
3. The size of the tree
Height, trunk thickness and how much canopy there is. Size matters — it is just not the only thing that matters, so a height band on its own will not tell you what your job costs.
4. The condition of the tree
A sound tree is predictable to work. One that has been damaged, is holding broken material, or has already failed in part is not, and it has to be approached differently.
5. What is nearby but not directly underneath
Powerlines and service lines, boundaries, structures, glass, and gardens you want protected. If there are powerlines close to the tree, tell us — that changes how the job has to be planned, and there are situations we will tell you to take to your electricity network provider first.
6. The stump
Removing a tree leaves a stump. Grinding it down is a separate service — see Stump Grinding Sydney — so tell us whether you want it included and the quote will show it as its own item.
7. What happens to the material
Branches and timber can be left cut and stacked on site, or cleared away. Green waste removal is quoted separately, so say which you want.
Why two quotes for the same tree can be very different
Often it is not that one business is expensive and another is cheap. It is that they have quoted different work.
One may clear the material and another may leave it stacked. One may include the stump. One may have allowed for lowering the tree in sections over a pool while the other assumed it can be dropped. Until you know what each quote actually covers, the numbers at the bottom are not comparable.
Ask every quote the same question: what is not included?
When tree removal is the right call
Removal is the decision people put off longest, usually because they are not certain it is necessary. It is worth getting a quote and a proper look when you notice:
- the tree has changed — a lean that was not there, lifting soil at the base, or a large limb that has come down
- it has outgrown its position, and you are cutting it back harder every year
- roots are lifting paving, a path or a driveway
- it sits over something that matters and you are no longer comfortable with it
- you are planning building work near it, or clearing space for a project
We will not tell you a tree is failing from a photo or a description. What we will do is look at it properly and quote both options where removal is not the obvious answer — because sometimes pruning solves the problem and keeps the tree.
Removal, cutting, trimming, pruning or lopping — what the words mean
People use these terms differently, so here is how we use them.
Tree removal takes the whole tree out, with the stump handled separately.
Tree cutting is not a service in itself — most people who search for it mean either removal or heavy branch work. Describe what you want changed and we will tell you which it is.
Tree pruning is planned work across the canopy where the tree stays — reducing, thinning, lifting or shaping.
Tree trimming usually means the same as pruning in everyday speech.
Tree lopping is heavier cutting back, usually where a tree has outgrown its space but is staying. See Tree Lopping Sydney.
If you are not sure which one you need, do not worry about the label. Tell us what the tree is doing and what you want to change.
When it is one branch rather than the whole tree
Sometimes the tree is fine and one limb is the problem — over a roof, scraping a car, or blocking light. That is branch work, not removal, and it is usually the smaller job.
It is worth pausing on the whole tree if you are taking limbs off the same tree repeatedly, if the branch you want gone is a large share of what is there, or if something about the tree itself concerns you rather than just the branch. Tell us which it is and we will quote accordingly.

What the removal process involves
Every job is different, but the shape is usually the same.
We look at the tree properly. What is underneath it, how we get in, what has to be protected, and whether removal is really what you need.
You get a written, fixed-price quote. It states what is included — the tree, the stump if you want it, and what happens to the material. That agreed price covers the agreed work. If you ask for something extra later, we quote that separately.
You choose when. We agree a time that suits you and turn up when we said we would.
The tree comes down in a controlled way. Where there is anything underneath, it is taken down in sections and lowered rather than dropped.
The site is left as agreed. Exactly what that means is set out in the quote, so there are no surprises.
Large trees and difficult positions
A big tree in an open paddock is a simpler job than a medium tree wedged between a house, a pool and a shared fence. Size matters, but position and access usually matter more.
Large trees generally need more planning, more people and more time, and they come down in smaller sections. If your tree is large, close to a structure, or in a tight spot, say so when you enquire — it is exactly the sort of job we would rather see properly before quoting.
Whose tree is it?
Worth settling before anyone books anything.
Your tree, entirely on your land. The simplest case. Your council may still have requirements — check the current information for your council area.
A neighbour's tree, or one on the boundary. Different responsibilities apply, your council may still treat the tree as protected, and permission to prune generally relates to work from your own side of the boundary. It is not consent to remove someone else's tree. Tell us whose tree it is and who is authorising the work.
A street tree or one in a park. That is the council's tree. Contact your council directly — we do not work on public trees on a resident's instruction.
Homes, strata, rentals and commercial sites
We work on all of them. What changes is who authorises the work and how the site is accessed.
For strata and commercial properties, tell us who is approving the job, whether there are access hours or parking restrictions, and whether other people need to be kept clear of the work area. For rentals, make sure the owner or agent has agreed before we book anything.
The stump and the material afterwards
Two things are left when a tree comes down: the stump, and the timber and branches.
The stump can stay or be ground down — it is a separate service, so ask for it if you want it. The material can be left cut and stacked on site, or cleared away as green waste, which is also quoted separately. Tell us which you would prefer and the quote will say exactly what is included.
Why removing a tree yourself is a bad idea
We are not going to lecture you. But tree removal goes wrong in predictable ways.
A tree does not fall where it looks like it will — lean, weight distribution and how it is attached all pull it somewhere else. It is easy to underestimate this work. SafeWork NSW lists falls from height, being struck by falling objects and working near power lines among the main hazards of tree work. Anything overhead, over a structure, near a power line or already damaged should be left to someone with the right equipment and the insurance behind it. If you are not sure where the line sits, ask us before you start.
How to get a clearer quote
Four things, and they take about five minutes.
1. Say what the tree is doing and what you want done
"The big one at the back is leaning towards the shed and I want it gone" tells us more than "tree needs looking at".
2. Describe what is underneath and around it
House, roof, fence, pool, driveway, shed, boundary, neighbouring property, footpath.
3. Describe the access
Gate width, side access, stairs, slope, where a vehicle can stop, and whether anything has to come through the house or a shared area.
4. List everything you want quoted
The stump, the green waste, another tree, the hedges, the gutters. One enquiry, one quote, one visit.
Photos help a great deal — one of the whole tree from a distance, one showing what is underneath it, and one of the access route. There is no photo upload on the enquiry form. Send the enquiry first, then text or email the photos through.
Example scenario
Illustrative example — not a customer case study.
A large tree in a back garden that the owner wants removed. It sits about four metres from the house, with a covered deck on one side and a neighbour's fence on the other. The only way in is a narrow side path.
What matters here: the tree cannot be dropped, so it comes down in sections and each piece is lowered. Access is narrow, so material is carried out rather than dragged. The owner also wants the stump gone and the timber taken away, so both appear as separate items on the quote.
The point: the quote is driven less by the size of the tree than by what is around it, how the material leaves the property, and what else is included.
Council requirements
Sydney councils set their own tree rules and they are not the same. We do not decide whether approval is required, we do not guarantee a council outcome, and we do not prepare, provide or arrange formal arborist reports.

If a tree or large limb has fallen, is hanging, or is resting on a structure, keep well clear and keep others clear. If there is a risk to life, a powerline involved or any electrical hazard, contact emergency services or your electricity network provider first.

They can. Removing the trunk and canopy does not necessarily kill the roots straight away. Stored energy can support new growth in some trees. Depending on the species and conditions, shoots may grow from the stump or from roots farther away. Shoots from roots are called root suckers. Stump grinding does not guarantee that all remaining roots will stop producing shoots. If regrowth is a concern, tell us when you enquire. We can discuss the stump work you want quoted without promising a particular regrowth outcome.
