Everyone searching this wants the same thing: a number. Published cost guides can give you a general range for planning, and they are worth a look. What they cannot do is price your tree.
Tree work is priced on the job, not on the tree. The same species, the same height, the same suburb — one sitting in an open backyard with a driveway beside it, the other wedged between a house, a pool and a shared fence — are two completely different jobs. That is why we quote after seeing photos or looking at the site: the price we agree covers the work we have agreed, and anything extra you ask for later is quoted separately.

Why there is no single Sydney price for tree removal
If tree removal were priced by the metre, every quote you got would be the same and there would be no reason to get more than one. It is not, because almost none of the work is the cutting.
Most of the cost of a tree job is in everything around the cut: getting people and equipment to the tree, controlling where each piece goes on the way down, protecting what is underneath, and getting the material back out again. A tree standing alone with a driveway beside it can be worked efficiently. The same tree behind a house, over a pool, with a metre-wide side gate and a neighbour's glasshouse on the other side of the fence, cannot.
It is also why a Sydney-wide average can only ever be a starting point. It blends jobs with very different positions, access and inclusions, so treat it as background rather than as a price for your tree.
What published cost guides currently report for Sydney
These are third-party market figures, not our prices and not a quote. They are useful for working out roughly what to budget before you get quotes.
Go Tree Quotes, a quote-comparison service that collects pricing from completed Australian jobs, reports a typical Sydney tree-removal cost of $1,350 to $3,490, and separately gives a Sydney average of $1,840. By tree size it reports about $620 for a small tree, $1,690 for a medium tree, $3,150 for a large tree and $5,490 for an extra-large one.
Read those as background rather than as a price for your tree. The published range does not cover the full size table, and it cannot know what sits underneath your tree, how the work area is reached, or whether you want the stump and the material dealt with. What changes a tree-removal quote
These are the things that actually move the number, roughly in order of how much difference they make.
1. Where the tree stands and what is underneath it
The biggest single factor. A tree over open lawn can come down in large pieces. A tree over a roof, a pool, a fence, a shed, a driveway, a neighbour's property or a public footpath has to be taken down in controlled sections and lowered, which takes longer and takes more people.
2. How we get to it, and how the material gets out
Gate widths, side access, stairs, slopes, retaining walls, where a vehicle can legally stop, shared driveways, strata access, and how far cut material has to be carried. Access is the factor people most often leave out of an enquiry and one of the largest differences between two otherwise identical jobs.
3. The size of the tree
Height, trunk thickness and how much canopy there is. Size matters — it is just not the only thing that matters, so a size band on its own will not tell you what your job costs.
4. The condition of the tree
A tree that is sound is predictable to work. One that has been damaged, is holding broken or hanging material, or has failed in part is not, and it has to be approached differently. Tell us what you have noticed; we will look at it when we quote rather than diagnosing it from a description.
5. What is nearby but not underneath
Powerlines and service lines, boundaries, structures, glass, gardens you want protected, and anything on a neighbouring property. If there are powerlines close to the tree, tell us — that changes how a job has to be planned, and there are situations we will tell you to take to your electricity network provider first.
6. Which service you actually need
Full removal, lopping, pruning, or work on one branch are four different scopes at four different prices. It is worth being clear about which one you want before comparing quotes.
7. What you want done with the material and the stump
Branches, timber and cuttings can be left on site or cleared. A stump can be left, or ground down. Both are quoted separately, so a quote is only comparable to another quote if you know which of these each one includes.

This is where most quote confusion comes from. These are separate scopes — if you want them, say so, and the quote will show them as line items.

Why two quotes for the same tree can look very different
Often it is not that one business is expensive and the other is cheap. It is that they have quoted different work.
One may include clearing the material and the other may leave it stacked. One may include the stump. One may have allowed for taking the tree down in sections over a pool while the other has assumed it can be dropped. One may include making good the lawn where machinery has been. Until you know what each quote actually covers, the numbers at the bottom are not comparable.
This is also the honest answer to "how do I find cheap tree removal". The cheapest number is not always the cheapest job — not because anyone is being dishonest, but because a quote that excludes the stump, the clean-up and the tricky side of the tree will always look smaller than one that includes them. Compare on scope first, then on price.
Questions worth asking about any tree-work quote
Ask these of us and of anyone else you get a quote from. The answers will tell you more than the figure will.
- What exactly is included? Which trees, which branches, and to what point.
- Is the stump included, or is it a separate item?
- What happens to the branches and timber — taken away, or left on site?
- What is the site expected to look like at the end?
- Has access been allowed for? Especially if the quote was prepared from photos.

What needs to go, and roughly how big it is. Rough is fine — "about as tall as the house" is genuinely useful.
What is underneath and around it. House, roof, fence, pool, driveway, shed, boundary, neighbouring property, public footpath.
Photos. One of the whole tree from a distance, one showing what is underneath, and one showing the access route. Take them from the ground, from somewhere safe. There is no photo upload on the enquiry form. Send the enquiry first, then text or email the photos through.
How we can reach the work area. Gate width, side access, stairs, slope, where a vehicle can stop, and whether anything has to come through the house or a shared area.
Everything else you want quoted. The stump, the green waste, another tree, the hedges, the gutters. One enquiry, one quote.
You do not need to guess a price, identify the species or know any of the terminology. Clear details about the property are worth more than any of that.
Council or project requirements
Council requirements are not a cost question, but they are a planning question, and they come before the work.

Two quotes for what looks like the same job: a large tree in a back garden that the owner wants gone.
The first quote is for taking the tree down and leaving the timber cut and stacked on site. The second is for taking the tree down, clearing all the material away, grinding the stump, and allowing for the fact that the only access is a 900mm side gate, so everything has to be carried through by hand.
What matters here: these are not two prices for one job. They are two different jobs. The owner's real decision is whether they want to deal with a stump and a pile of timber themselves. Once that is settled, the quotes can be compared properly.
