Pruning sits in an awkward spot. Some of it is genuinely a Saturday-morning job with a pair of secateurs. Some of it puts people in hospital. The tricky part is that both can look similar from the back door.
This page gives you a simple way to tell them apart, so you can get on with the easy work and hand over the rest without wondering whether you are being over-cautious.
The simple test: feet, tools, and what is underneath
Before you start any pruning, run through three questions.
1. Can you do it with both feet on the ground?
If you need a ladder, a step, a chair or to climb into the tree, stop. Working at height with a cutting tool takes away your balance and your ability to react.
2. Can you do it with hand tools?
Secateurs, loppers and a hand saw for small branches are one thing. A chainsaw or a pole saw is another. Powered cutting tools at or above shoulder height are where things go badly wrong quickly.
3. What happens if the branch goes where you did not plan?
Look at what is underneath and behind. A roof, a pool, a fence, a window, a car, a path people use — or a powerline. If the answer is anything valuable or occupied, do not start.
If you answered "no" to either of the first two, or the third one makes you pause, that is a job to book.
The absolute stop signs
Whatever the branch looks like, do not prune it yourself if:

- the branch is over the house, a pool, a driveway, a fence line or a neighbour's property;
- the tree is leaning, split, storm-damaged or has lifted soil at the base;

- you would need to hire equipment you have not used before.
Why branches behave unpredictably
A branch is not just weight sitting on a tree. It is weight under load.
- Tension and compression. A branch bearing weight releases that energy when it is cut, and it can spring, twist or drop faster than expected.
- Hidden weight. Green timber is much heavier than most people estimate.
- Attachment. Where two limbs meet, the join can be far weaker than it looks, especially if it has been under strain.
- Hollow or decayed sections. A branch can be sound on the outside and not on the inside.

Pruning done badly causes its own problems
Safety is not only about the day of the job. Poor pruning is hard to undo, and you live with the result for years.
- Removing too much foliage reduces the leaves a tree uses to make food. Poorly placed pruning cuts can leave wounds vulnerable to decay.
- Topping — cutting branches back indiscriminately to stubs — can trigger shoots that are weakly attached and prone to breaking.
- Torn or ragged cuts are worse than making no cut at all.
